2020 Doomsday Clock Statement
THE ARMS RACE IN SPACE
While space weapons development draws the attention of an increasing number of nations, as of 2019 outer space is officially a “war-fighting domain”. For decades this issue has demanded urgent attention and resolution, yet it was forestalled. It could have been prevented. It wasn't. Now the arms race intensifies.
Yes, and it's made possible by a lot more than our technological capabilities. The existing legal regime doesn't prohibit the deployment or use of conventional weapons for space combat. What's more, it doesn't adequately address modern day dilemmas concerning outer space, an increasingly competitive domain.
Weaponising space could be a great destabilising factor in world politics and a danger to our everyday life, which overwhelmingly relies on the use of satellites. An arms race is not an appropriate response in the face of the climate catastrophe, when our collective future so strongly relies on international cooperation.
Civil action, diplomacy and international cooperation are key to resolving this issue. If we act now we might be able to push our politicians to fix the regulatory framework, before the situation gets further out of hand, which will help to avoid the worst case scenario.
